Department of Epidemiology & Public Health

Disease at population scale, and where animal health meets human health.

Epidemiology & Public Health

What this department covers

The Department of Epidemiology & Public Health focuses on developing knowledge and skills required for the investigation, control and prevention of diseases in animal and human populations. Epidemiology plays an important role in addressing zoonoses, food safety, transboundary diseases and other animal and veterinary public health challenges. The department strives to meet the current and future needs for trained professionals in this field.

The department offers undergraduate courses across various degree programs at the university and has undergraduate and postgraduate laboratory facilities supported by PhD faculty with international exposure. Its location in the Bahawalpur region provides valuable opportunities for epidemiological learning and research, particularly because of regional efforts toward disease-free zones and the development of animal and animal-product export activities. The Cholistan desert also presents unique challenges and opportunities for epidemiological research.

  • Teaching and research in veterinary epidemiology and public health
  • Investigation, prevention and control of animal diseases with socioeconomic and public health impact
  • Research on zoonoses, food safety, transboundary diseases and endemic diseases of animal origin
  • Community awareness, professional capacity building and evidence-based disease control practices

The mission of the department is to support teaching, research and related activities for the control, prevention and eradication of animal diseases having socioeconomic and public health significance. Its vision is to develop human resources capable of applying epidemiological principles and methods to address animal and veterinary public health problems in local settings. Future plans include postgraduate programs, collaborative research, community awareness, consultancy in epidemiological studies, capacity building and active participation in disease prevention and control programs.
